What?
I went with the Rotaract club that I joined back in the beginning of the school year. We went to a small church that had tables set up in a giant loop with various foods grouped on all the tables with many plastic bags. What we did was we willed plastic bags with food that would be sent home with kids that go to public school in the area that struggle to find food on the weekends when they don't have access to school cafeteria food.
So What?
What made an impact on me was the fact that many members of the New River Valley Community came together to help this cause. It was so amazing to see that the well being of small members in this community was important to so many people. One year from now, if I had to tell someone about this experience I would remember the shock I was in when I walked in to see the large number of people there to help. I will remember how great it was to see multiple cars full of food that was going to be sent home with hundreds of kids so that they did not starve that weekend. This is connected to service in this class because it shows the community coming together as one to back this great organization. It shows the strength that a community can have when they come together to help others. I remember how fast we got it done and it was all because of all the helping hands. The more hands and hearts in on a problem, the more effective the outcome. It has grown because more people have heard of the organization and now more local stores donate food. This reminds me of the active citizenship chart that we analyzed. I saw many active citizens helping that day.
Now What?
This event was definitely worth while because I got to help out and mingle with different members of the community. This makes me wonder how kids in my community back home get food on the weekends? Is Micah's Backpack aided by the government in any way? This makes me want to look into the statistics of how many kids need aid, like this, in this country.
